Pitch Perfect 2 might not have a "Cups" yet (technically Anna Kendrick does perform her song on the new soundtrack but it's not a Hot 100 smash anymore) but it still managed something that the previous film's song collection didn't: topping the albums charts. The record, boosted by medleys featuring dozens of hit songs, won the sales battle this week by moving 91,000 copies.
Last week's no. 1, Mumford & Sons' Wilder Mind, saw a drop-off typical of second week records but still managed to keep the no. 2 spot with roughly 50,500 copies sold. They edge another rock act (yes...Mumford & Sons is rock now) as Incubus places higher on the albums chart with Trust Fall (Side A), which sold 37,500 copies and took no. 3 in its first week.
Josh Groban fell all the way to no. 8 on the Billboard 200 this week but he only slides to no. 3 on the albums chart with Stages. His fall on the other chart is because his Broadway standards collection isn't exactly popular streaming fodder, however actual album sales are doing relatively well by comparison...selling 37,000 copies.
Now 54, which is only available as a full album, drops to no. 5 during its second week, moving 34,500 copies. The Zac Brown Band continues to benefit from country fans' tendency to buy whole albums, allowing his Jekyll + Hyde to stick around another week with 32,500 in sales.
David Guetta, as he did on the Billboard 200, has reached a new high on the albums chart with Listen, the album he released during December. Google Play offered the album for a mere 99 cents...which drove nearly 30,000 people to download it.
Although the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack didn't keep its high numbers from Mother's Day, it did stay relatively high in terms of sales. The collection sold another 26,000 copies and placed no. 8.
It's odd to consider that Snoop Dogg didn't manage to crack the Top 10 on the Billboard 200, and he barely did so on the albums chart as well. Bush, the new collection from the rapper, settled for no. 9 after selling 24,500 copies.
Taylor Swift's overall album sales have been strong but it looks like 1989 may be about to slip from the Top 10 for the first time after 29 weeks. The album came in at no. 10 last week after selling 21,500 copies.
