With Sweden's storied lineage of DJs that span from the likes of Adam Beyer, Eric Prydz, Henrik B, Axwell and newcomers such as Alesso and Avicii, it should be no surprise that those in the highest rung of society would be interested in the genre. According to Swedish website The Local, which cites an interview with Swedish radio station NRJ, Avicii, real name Tim Bergling, has confirmed that he will be performing at the royal wedding between Prince Carl Philip and Sofia Hellqvist next month. The "Wake Me Up" DJ joins Icona Pop as confirmed artists who will perform during the June 13 banquet at the Royal Palace.
According to the Swedish DJ, who spoke to the radio station from his home in Los Angeles, he met the prince in Ibiza.
"I met Carl Philip in Ibiza, where we got to hang out and talk for some time," Avicii told NRJ. "He is so damn cool and a really good guy, actually. Humble."
The pair discussed the possibility of Avicii playing at his wedding and the idea was brought to the DJs management in Stockholm.
"It will be really fun...it's an honour of course," adds Bergling.
The trip will serve several purposes in mid June. It will be European festival season, so Bergling will be back on the road doing a fair amount of the major events in Europe. He is also headlining major Swedish dance music festival Summerburst that weekend, hosting his own "Avicii Festival" during the two-day affair.
This is not the first time the royal family has called upon a big name DJ to help throw a family celebration. Armin van Buuren joined the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in 2013 for the coronation ceremony of the new king and queen, which was a major milestone in his career.
