Before the former Nirvana drummer and current Foo Fighters front man made it big in the rock industry, Dave Grohl had extreme ambition and looked up his heroes just like the rest of strongly devoted youth. A fan letter penned by a 14 year-old, calm, cool and collected Grohl recently resurfaced...the letter was sent to Minor Threat and Fugazi vocalist, Ian MacKaye, notes The Huffington Post.
While most fans would erupt at the thought of conversing with their favorite artist, Grohl skipped the emotions and cut straight to business. The letter asks MacKaye to hook Grohl up with numbers in the music industry, as "David" listed his area code-less phone number and his hours of availability between 3 and 10 p.m—presumably after school hours leading up to his curfew. Grohl is now 46, which means MacKaye held onto the fan mail for over 30 years, making him a commonly hoarding human like the rest of us.
News of the letter broke out on Reddit where fans flocked to tell their down-to-earth encounters with MacKaye. Users detailed how he responded to fan letters, made himself readily available for a college interview and hung out with fans before shows. The once 14 year-old boy with a dream to break into the music industry most recently closed The Late Show with David Letterman and was brought on stage by Paul McCartney to perform "I Saw Her Standing There."
During the latest Foo Fighter's show in Manchester, Grohl reached out to a young fan himself, 8-year-old Frankie. When the frontman noticed Frankie singing all the words to his songs, he was intrigued, asked how old he was and called him up to the stage to help perform "Times Like These," notes Loudwire. "Aw this little kid singing our lyrics over there," Grohl told the Manchester crowd "How old are you? You're 8 years old and you know Foo Fighters lyrics? I like you. This song goes out to you." Second later Grohl says, "What's that? You want him to come onstage? Come on motherf-ker." Making his way to the stage, Grohl uttered, "You better bring your Dad with you. Oh yeah, bring your mama. I'm not taking care of you, that's for g-ddamn sure."
