Seems like that country album that Bright Eyes and Desaparecidos frontman Conor Oberst is working on is well on its way. Today (Feb. 11), Oberst began streaming a new single "Hundreds Of Ways" on his official YouTube account and announced a 20-city tour for late spring alongside Americana rock act Dawes.
As confirmed in Rolling Stone, Oberst has been finishing up a country-infused solo album in Nashville alongside Dawes producer Jonathan Wilson. The traditional country influences are clear on "Hundreds Of Ways," a largely peppy song that also seems to incorporate rumba vibes and a celebratory island feel.
Vintage sounding guitars and a bopping beat back Oberst's signature strained vocals, blending together sounds that will please old Bright Eyes fans and help to expand Oberst's audience to more folky fans.
"Hundreds Of Ways" also further helps to separate Oberst from the highly emotional music of Bright Eyes. "Don't contradict me / Don't make me cross the line / If you feel threatened, it's only cause I'm mine / But there are hundreds of ways to get through the day / So you best find one," he sings in the track's chorus.
According to Nonesuch Records, "Hundreds Of Ways" is the first single from Oberst's upcoming solo album Upside Down Mountain, due out May 20.
As for the tour, supporting acts Dawes and Oberst are old partners in crime. Dawes previously opened for Bright Eyes on the The People's Key tour in 2011.
