The Rolling Stones have been pulling out all the stops on their North American "Zip Code" Tour, bringing special guests onstage to dazzle the audience while digging deep into its career-spanning catalogue to play rarities and fan favorites. During its Kansas City Arrowhead Stadium gig, the seasoned rockers continued the trend by bringing Ed Sheeran on stage to duet "Beast of Burden" with Mick Jagger.
Sheeran and the Stones agreed to collaborate on "Beast of Burden" "after days of discussion," as noted on the Rolling Stones YouTube page. Jagger and the British pop star joked about their planning process, stating they considered playing Fetty Wap's "Trap Queen" instead of the Some Girls staple. "Ed and I have been rehearsing," Jagger said. "We think it's going to work in Kansas City. It's one of the favorite songs of this group, so we're bashing away at the piano and guitar doing that." Sheeran tackled a cover of the rapper's hit song during his visist to the Tonight Show.
The band's latest tour gives them the creative freedom to perform covers based on the gig location—some not having been played in almost a half—century. Its Columbus, Ohio date brought a surprise cover of "Hang on Sloopy" by the McCoy's while its Kansas City concert allowed the group to unveil its version of "Kansas City" by Little Willie Littlefield (the first since its last adaptation in the early sixties, notes Rolling Stone).
Previous to Sheeran, other acts to join the legendary act on stage are Buddy Guy, who jammed on a rendition of Muddy Waters' "Champagne & Reefer" with the Stones on June 23 at Milwaukee's Summerfest, Gary Clark Jr. played on "Bitch" for the tour opening show in San Diego while country favorite Brad Paisley lent a helping hand to perform "Dead Flowers" in Pittsburgh. Sheeran made the most of his time with the Stones and even insisted on posting an Instagram selfie.
