Yesterday, Drake used his power as a public figure to post a heartfelt tribute to one of his fans that tragically drowned recently while on a rugby trip in Canada according to the BBC. The "Energy" rapper was made aware of the death by the #DrakeNoticeJamal tag and then posted a picture and message on Instagram in memory of Jamal Ottun, saying, "Heard this young man was a big fan. Rest In Peace Jamal. Watch over me from way up above!"
After the 17-year-old student at Walling County Grammar School in Sutton, London drowned on a rugby tour in Vancouver Island, British Columbia his friends started a Twitter campaign #DrakeNoticeJamal to try to get the attention of his favorite artist. The hashtag subsequently went viral and over 30,000 messages were sent to Drake's Twitter and Instagram accounts, leaving him with no choice but to notice according to Buzzfeed. Even other celebrities got involved with the campaign after it trended in the UK such as actor Tyger Drew-Honey, which helped the tag gather even more steam.
Drake is not the first celebrity or artist to post a tribute to a recently deceased fan. Lady Gaga, Megadeth's Dave Mustaine, Ryan Gosling, Peyton Manning and others have all written tributes for fans who have died. You can check out all of the #DrakeNotice posts on Twitter here, but check out a few select ones below to see why people were so enamored with the much loved Ottun.
