Drake and Meek Mill are the two names on everybody's tongue right now, but it seems as if the former emcee has bigger problems than Nicki Minaj's boyfriend: Kendrick Lamar may have taken shots at Drizzy during his guest spots on Dr. Dre's Compton release.
Let's clarify right now that these examples are far from obvious, but Consequence of Sound may be onto something with these:
01) "Enemies giving me energy / I wanna fight now / Subliminally sent to me all of this hate" (from "Darkside/Gone"). This seems to be referencing Drake's track "Energy."
02) "They liable to bury him, they nominated six to carry him/ They worrying him to death, but he's no vegetarian/ The beef is on his breath, inheriting the drama better than/ A great white, n*gga, this is life in my aquarium." This hostile set of lines references Drake's fascination with the number six, and Lamar also references "Started From The Bottom" earlier in the track.
There has been rumors of beef between the two for years but the pair has generally squashed it as merely rumors. Why is Lamar on the hunt all of the sudden? He's certainly not coming to Mill's defense. The Philadelphia rapper was one of many who took offense to Lamar's legendary "Control" verse during 2013, and ultimately failed to make any dent in Lamar's credibility. Sort of like, you know, how he's totally failing to make a dent in Drake's credibility.
The psychologists at Music Times have an alternate theory: Lamar knows he's pretty close to the top of the game right now, and may be at the literal top in terms of wordplay. Drake's domination of Mill probably has his confidence pretty high and Lamar wants to put him in his place before he gets any ideas. After all, as Mill pointed out, Drake didn't respond to Pusha T's disses...and we don't blame him. Pusha and Lamar are more intellectually intimidating than Mill, and Drake isn't looking for a fight in the open with those emcees.
