Paper Gods, Duran Duran's forthcoming album, is set to drop September 18 via Warner Bros. Records and the classic British 80s synth pop band is giving us another early taste with the single "What Are The Chances."
Some might be surprised to learn Duran Duran has been actively releasing music since the group's hit song "Hungry Like The Wolf" and "Rio" hit the airwaves in 1981. In fact, Paper Gods is Duran Duran's 14th album and this one enlists a star cast of collaborating musicians including Red Hot Chili Peppers former guitarist John Frusciante, Janelle Monaé, Nile Rogers, "Uptown Funk" writer Mark Ronson and Kiesza.
Timing couldn't be more on Duran Duran's side for this release as the new wave style the band pioneered is making a resurgence in popular culture. Bands such as Haim, Daft Punk, Chvrches and many more have benefitted from the EDM craze over taking the world of music in recent years, and turned it on its head to come up with a fresh take on electro-pop.
Duran Duran's music was the hip new wave sound back in the 80s and now, after more than 30 years of creating music, they are bringing on a star-studded cast to elevate them back into the charts.
The song opens up with a sneering guitar lick that evokes images of 80s hair metal before the main synth part drops in. The song is about missed opportunities as Simon Le Bon belts out an anthemic chorus.
This is actually the fourth single released by the band in the slow rollout for the album. The other tracks include "Pressure Off," "You Kill Me With Silence," and the album's title track "Paper Gods."
