In a recent episode of the IFC series, Portlandia, Fred Armisen is clueless when it comes to hip-hop. Despite being a knowledgeable musician in real life, he has to take a crash course in hip-hop history from his friend and partner Carrie Brownstein before he joins her at a hip-hop show.
With a presentation, timeline and graphs, Brownstein gets to work schooling Armisen, beginning with the late '70s in New York City. Armisen doesn't seem to be catching on at first. He mispronounces 'Wu-Tang Clan' as 'Wu Tang Clang' and asks if Sir Mix-A-Lot was a member. He also wonders if Sugarhill Gang were "really a gang" and "Is this a fad, or is this here to stay?"
All of his studying pays off, though, when at the show, the MC stops the music to ask an audience member what his or her favorite moment is in hip-hop history. Armisen answers him confidently.
