Will they or won't they? First, it seemed like U2 were gearing up to release a new album in 2014 with a new single, award show nominations and talk show appearances. Then, Billboard reported that the album had been delayed until 2015. Now, a representative for U2 has fired back, saying that the prolific rockers WILL drop a new LP this year.
In an interview with The Guardian posted on Monday (March 10), a representative for the "Invisible" band started that contrary to reports, U2 is still on track to release its 13th studio album in 2014.
"U2's album is planned for this year, is still on track and touring plans haven't been confirmed yet," the spokesperson simply said.
Other rumors about the new album reported by Billboard, including a switch in producer to OneRepublic's Ryan Tedder and new recording sessions were not cleared up or addressed.
Details about the album, including a name, exact release date and title have yet to be announced. The untitled record will be U2's first full-length release since 2009's No Line On The Horizon.
It would be smart for U2 to release an album in 2014, given it'd be completed on time, as Bono, The Edge and co. have been on quite the roll. In January, the band took home the Golden Globe for its Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom single "Ordinary Love," and then U2 was nominated for an Oscar for the same track. It also teamed up with (RED) for a Super Bowl Sunday single "Invisible," which was made available for free download.
All the publicity and new material has given more momentum to U2 than the band has had in years.
