Stephen Colbert thus far is living up to all the hype built around his first two weeks as host of The Late Show with an emotional interview with Vice President Joe Biden, smart political jokes about Donald Trump and spectacular music performances. Last night he added a collaborative performance from Run The Jewels and TV On The Radio to that roster of music for a performance of "Angel Duster."
The song is the often forgotten closing track from Run The Jewels sophomore album Run The Jewels 2, but it was the perfect song for the show as it plays right into TV On The Radio's style.
Cloaked in red light Killer Mike and El-P brought the energy as they tore through the thick political and religious lines of the song.
"A pope is a fraud/ A church is a lie/ A queen is the same damn thing/ You should pray to your fake god that she die/ God really exists I tell you like this it reside inside/ And anybody tell you different, just selling you religion, tryin' to keep your ass in line."
While the gangster rap duo brought the raw and poignant lyrical power, TV On The Radio brought its brand of electronic rock, giving the song a revived energy from the live instrumentals you don't get from a single DJ on stage.
The night before The Dead Weather performed for the first time in five years with their song "Love You (Every Million Miles)." The week before, Colbert opened his show with a superjam including Buddy Guy Mavis Staples, Ben Folds and many more stars. Paul Simon even closed out the first week with a performance of "Me And Julio Down By The Schoolyard."
Wednesday night you can see Willie Nelson perform on the show. Watch Run The Jewels and TV On The Radio tear up the Late Show stage below and watch out for that big bear hug from Killer Mike at the end.
