Upon watching a rough cut of his latest concert film Roger Waters The Wall, the former Pink Floyd bassist realized a certain element was missing, leaving the film incomplete. Throughout The Wall, images of those affected by war flash across a huge constructed wall while the band's iconic 1979 double album plays and Waters plans to keep up with tradition.
The 72-year-old musician sat down with Rolling Stone to further discuss his latest film venture and Pink Floyd's relationship with Jimi Hendrix.
"I realized that there was a bit of my narrative that was sort of missing. So I came up with the idea of making a road trip to my grandfather's grave and to the memorial to my father. Plus, it will give me an excuse to buy an old Bentley," he said.
Waters continued to open up about his father, divulging that he never visited the beach in Italy where his father died until recently - footage can be seen in Roger Waters The Wall. He admitted that it took him so long to make the trip because he never knew much information about his father's death and his body was never found. Trailing the film's release, Waters and Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason will conduct a Q&A. The two have remained on good terms as of late, "He was staying with me last week," Waters said of Mason.
The two recently reunited for a 50th anniversary celebration in London and thinking back towards the earlier Floyd days, Water reminisced time spent with guitar great Jimi Hendrix on tour. "It was about six weeks going all around the U.K., playing in cinemas and little guildhalls and that sort of thing. I remember we used to go stand in the wings and watch Hendrix at the end of the evening, because there was nowhere to go anyway. And he only did 35 minutes. He'd do "Purple Haze", "Hey Joe" and "Wild Thing." That was sort of the set."
"He was a bit childlike, Jimi. He was kind of innocent. Lovely fellow, as far as I know, the sweetest man. Obviously brilliant," he said.
The former Pink Floyd member has performed The Wall 219 times from 2010 to 2013 while his latest installment is due out in theaters September 29.
