Cat Power and Jakob Dylan, band leader of The Wallflowers, have released a preview promotional cover of The Turtles' hit song "You Showed Me," in anticipation of a full tribute performance alongside Beck, Fiona Apple, Regina Spektor and Jade, formerly of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, celebrating the music of classic 60s folk rock bands. The event, titled Echo in the Canyon, is set to take place October 12 at the Orpheum Theater in Los Angeles, celebrating the 50th anniversary of southern California folk rock, according to Pitchfork. The list of all-star modern artists will cover songs from acts including The Byrds, The Beach Boys, Buffalo Springfield, The Mamas & The Papas, The Association and more.
Echo in the Canyon is more of a preview of the album to come in early 2016 featuring all the songs performed on October 12.
For now, we'll just have to settle for the wonderful reimagined cover of The Turtle's "You Showed Me" written by The Byrds' Gene Clark and Jim McGuinn and performed by Cat Power and Dylan. Where The Turtles' original version is choppier with some pulsing distorted keys like a good Doors songs, Dylan and Cat Power smoothed it out with better, more modern production techniques and more orchestral string parts. The back and forth between the two artist's voices works in a great and often haunting way, however it would be impossible to match the beautiful vocal harmonies on the original.
If this is just the first song from the project we'll be in for a treat when the full album rolls around with more great covers from this cast of talented modern folk artists. Could you imagine Fiona Apple singing Joni Mitchell or Beck tackling the psychedelic folk of Jefferson Airplane?
Listen to the track below and get psyched for this project.
