Jimi Hendrix ‘Electric Church’ Concert Film Gets DVD, Blu-Ray Release Date

The latest Jimi Hendrix documentary film is almost ready to grace the DVD shelves of the late guitar icon's fans world-wide. Jimi Hendrix: Electric Church, which boasts footage from the legendary gig at the July 4, 1970 Atlanta Pop Festival, will release a specially-crafted home version on October 30.

The film's soundtrack was previously unveiled on August 28 and the film itself saw a release on Showtime. The unique home version of the film will feature footage not included in the original televised broadcast. According to a statement by Hendrix's estate, "The film details the efforts by Atlanta promoter Alex Cooley to create the definitive music festival. Cooley secured such talent as Bob Seger, BB King and the Allman Brothers, but Hendrix was the critical component he needed to elevate the three day festival to a major cultural event. Electric Church features interviews with Hendrix's Experience band mates Billy Cox and the late Mitch Mitchell as well as Paul McCartney, Steve Winwood, Rich Robinson, Kirk Hammett, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, festival organizer Alex Cooley and many others."

Electric Church is mostly made up of footage filmed by Steve Rash, Buddy Holly Story director, who kept the film stored away trailing a foiled plan to craft a Woodstock-style documentary. Over 30 years later, the reels were developed, giving fans the rousing opportunity to enjoy what a press release describes as "a transcendent viewing experience."

The audio soundtrack for the home version contains stereo and 5.1 surround sound mixes directly from the original master tapes by Eddier Kramer, Hendrix's recording engineer. Filled with bonus material, Electric Church offers rare performances of "Freedom" and "Red House," both left out of the broadcast, as well as a "Room Full of Mirrors" music video that splices together existing footage with previously unseen photographs from the gig, UltimateClassicRock notes. The mesmerizing performance of the classic fan-favorite, "Purple Haze," has already been released as well as the complete track listing.
