Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson collaborated on their hit single, "Say Say Say," back in 1983 to massive success, but there were more vocal tracks hidden away that McCartney decided must be heard and brought to light for a new music video and remix of the song.
The song comes as part of a reissue of McCartney's Pipes of Peace, remastered for 2015. According to Consequence of Sound, the idea came while listening to a remix of "Say Say Say" earlier this year from DJ John "Jellybean" Benitez. That's when McCartney realized there were vocal tracks never used in the final recording. He and Chief Engineer Steve Orchard began reimagining the song, placing vocals from Jackson at the beginning instead of McCartney's opening lines, adding to the track's length.
But that wasn't the last trick up the former Beatle's sleeve. He sent it over to Mark "Spent" Stint for another remix and music video choreographed by Ryan Heffington, who's worked with Sia and Lady Gaga in the past.
The gorgeous music video shows kids dancing their way through a vibrant neighborhood, making a ruckus and eventually ending up at a fancy dance social, tearing up the floor.
Its black and white color scheme and celebration of black culture as well as the diversity of music, dance and all art, is reminiscent of Kendrick Lamar's philosophy of self improvement on his hit album, To Pimp A Butterfly, which explored similar themes. The funky bass lines, hip-hop dancing, blaring horns and visual style of the video feel modern and relevant to the ethos of 2015 despite a song that's over 30 years old.
Check out the video below, which was released Tuesday via Spent's Facebook page. You can also check out the original music video for "Say Say Say," which exudes a similar cultural feel that Spent obviously tapped into on his version.
