Neon Indian's fantastic third album VEGA INTL. Night School came out last week, introducing fans to the sludgy, messy, sexual disco world the album conveys. Now, there's a music video and short film to visualize that world titled "Slumlord Rising."
According to Stereogum, the eight-minute short film co-directed by the music's creator Alan Palomo himself and Tim Nackashi serves as the music video for his songs "Slumlord" and "Slumlord Re-Lease." The video depicts a sleazy nightclub filled with all sorts of debauchery that quickly turns to blood shed over a mysterious brief case and two warring factions.
A motorcyclist working for "The Slumlord, stands heroically in the doorway looking like the red Power Ranger with his face covered by the intense glare of the neon lights shimmering off the helmet's visor as he prepares to take on the villain. He's assisted by a female companion, who infiltrates the club likely in sighting the violence that ensues.
It's an odd music video that raises more questions than it actually answers. But, more importantly it sets the tone and theme for Neon Indian's whole album.
The short film comes as a feature on Yours Truly, Neon Indian's official website, which displays interviews with the people closest to the Palomo. These include interviews with his roommate, who discusses the intense amount of drinking and partying that went on during the album's creation, his brother's jubilation to working on the album and getting the chance to spend more time with his bro and engineers talking about the odd sounds on VEGA INTL. Night School.
According to Pitchfork, there's also a Neon Indian hotline (1-512-643-VEGA), which will direct you to a message from Palomo and send you a GIF from the music video.
