Yesterday, R.E.M.'s Mike Mills announced David Letterman's retirement from the Late Show via Twitter. He happened to be performing the show that day when Letterman told the audience of his decision.
He and bandmate Peter Buck along with singer-songwriter Joseph Arthur hit the stage to pay tribute to the late Lou Reed with a poignant cover of his classic "Walk on the Wild Side."
Arthur was on the show in support of his Lou Reed tribute album, simple titled, Lou. The effort is due out May 13 via Vanguard Records.
He spoke about his decision to put out a tribute album in the liner notes to his new collection (via Rolling Stone).
"It's odd dancing around death, odder still if the death you are dancing around is that of a legend," Arthur wrote. "You just never know what's appropriate and what's not, what to share and what to keep inside. There is no blueprint. I loved Lou and we were friends. The last thing I would want to do is turn his life into an opportunity, but at the same time, what better way to honor the man and his music than to celebrate it and sing it and record it?"
