Nirvana will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame tomorrow night and is expected to perform. But one question remains: Who will front the band in place of Kurt Cobain? New evidence suggests it could be Joan Jett.
Drummer Dave Grohl's Foo Fighters fueled these rumors when they posted a photo to Instagram of Krist Novoselic's bass, Pat Smear's Strat, Grohl's drumkit and what appears to be Jett's stickered Melody Maker.
Jett doesn't have much of a connection to Cobain or Nirvana, though she has performed with Grohl in the past, as Billboard notes. Back in 2011, the Foo Fighters appeared with Jett on The Late Show with David Letterman and Grohl collaborated with on "Any Weather," off Jett's 2013 album Unvarnished.
Jett is sort of a left-field choice, seeing as she was never part of the grunge scene, but it makes sense that they would chose a female on vocals to avoid Cobain comparisons. There had been speculation that R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe, who is presenting the award, would perform with the band, but a female vocalist might end up being the better choice.
Jett herself has not yet been inducted into the Hall of Fame. KISS, Linda Ronstadt, Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, Peter Gabriel, Hall & Oates and Cat Stevens will be inducted during a gala at Brooklyn's Barclays Center along with Nirvana.
