Lorde rules Billboard Music Award nominations, thanks to 'Royals'

Lorde is royally carrying the torch of the Billboard music charts. Today (April 9), it was announced that the 17-year-old New Zealander is leading the final nominations for the 2014 Billboard Music Awards.

With a whopping 12 nominations, Lorde joins Imagine Dragons as the most-named act for the honorees for the annual award show. According to Billboard, the two new musical acts bested the likes of more established artists such as Justin Timberlake, Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus. But don't feel bad for them. Timberlake has 11 nods, Perry 10 and Cyrus nine.

Among nominations for rock categories, streaming and digital sales for "Royals" and her debut album Pure Heroine, Lorde joins Bastille, Capital Cities, Ariana Grande and Passenger for the Top new Artist honor.

Other top nods went to Cyrus, Timberlake, Imagine Dragons, Bruno Mars and Perry for Top Artist; Luke Bryan, Drake, Eminem, Mars and Timberlake for Top Male Artist; Beyoncé, Cyrus, Lorde, Rihanna and Perry for Top Female Artist; and Florida Georgia Line, Imagine Dragons, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, One Direction and OneRepublic for Top Duo/Group.

Shockingly, pop superstar Lady Gaga, who released Artpop last year, is only nominated for one award: Top Dance/Electronic Album amongst acts such as Avicii, Daft Punk, Lindsey Stirling and Zedd.

The Billboard Music Awards are based on fan interactions throughout the year, including social media use and music streaming, according to the publication.

The award show will take place on NBC on May 18 on ABC. Check out a full list of nominees here.
