A little over 40 years after "You're So Vain" was released, Carly Simon has finally released the name of the famous person the song is about. Or, at least, who part of the mysterious hit single is about.
The mystery that has left many people and generations curious as to who the song is about has finally been somewhat solved as Simon told People that the second verse of the song is about Warren Beatty.
"I have confirmed that the second verse is Warren," she said. Not only has Simon revealed who the song was about to everyone else, but she has also informed Beatty about his verse. She even joked and took a little jab at Beatty when she spoke about him. "Warren thinks the whole thing is about him!" But according to Simon, he only got a singular verse.
Back in 1972 Simon crooned this verse, which we now know is about Beatty.
"You had me several years ago when I was still quite naive / Well you said that we made such a pretty pair / And that you would never leave / But you gave away the things you loved and one of them was me / I had some dreams, they were clouds in my coffee, clouds in my coffee, and..."
Simon was married to James Taylor from 1972 to '83 and according to The Today Show neither of the other verses or chorus are about him. For those thinking she will release who the rest of the song is about because she gave away the verse about Beatty, think again. Simon never even thought she would reveal that the song was about more than one person.
"I don't know if I'll do it. I never thought I would admit that it was more than one person!" she exclaimed.
The 70-year-old Simon does not plan on releasing their names any time soon. In fact, she still finds it crazy on how the interest of the song's inspiration has stuck for so long.
Simon's revelation comes right before the release of her book, Boys in Trees which is due out Nov. 24.
