Adele's "Hello" is quickly becoming the most covered and remixed song of year, with everyone from Demi Lovato to Rick Ross taking a stab at it. Now, D∆WN Richard (formerly of Danity Kane; Diddy-Dirty Money) is the latest to take the power ballad for a spin, but this isn't your typically karaoke cover.
Known for her experimental R&B sound, D∆WN drags "Hello" from the middle of the road into the dark side on her brooding reimaging of Adele's latest No. 1.
Menacing basslines and sizzling percussion set the mood before D∆WN drops into the song's signature opening line. Instead of flexing her vocal chops she opts for an ambient approach, oozing swag and confidence over haunting harmonies.
If the makeover seemed a bit effortless it's because this isn't D∆WN's first time tackling a Billboard hit, last year she took Katy Perry's "Dark Horse" for a ride with similar result.
While fans of "Hello" don't need to wait any longer to ingest its parent album 25 (in stores today), fans of D∆WN still have to hold out till next year for her latest album The Red Era. As the final installment of her album trilogy, she's been taking her time putting the finishing touches since dropping the double visual for singles "Billie Jean" and "Dance" last month.
"This one's a special one... this is the championship," she told DJ Times in September. "This is the final hoorah for us with this trilogy and I think you have to end it right or it will just be a devastation to all the other wins before. So we are taking our time, it's done, we already got the project finish but I just want to make sure the third one is a charm because you don't want to build people up to give something so beautiful as those first two albums and then they are devastated at the third because then it will X out the other two that did so well."
