Blackheart will be Richard's third solo album overall, her first since 2013's Goldenheart. Richard has also released two EPs: Armor On and Whiteout, both released in 2012.
"Blackheart is purely falling into the electronic world," Richard told Billboard in October about the album's sound, "and pushing the envelope."
The album was reportedly planned immediately after Goldenheart, but had to be postponed when Danity Kane reunited in 2013.
"It came out of left field," Richard said of the Danity Kane reunion, "and it was hard at first, because the momentum was really great and it would have been perfect to drop Blackheart, but I wasn't looking at it for selfish reasons. My girls asked me to come back, and I had to pay homage to the fact that there wouldn't be Goldenheart if there wasn't Danity Kane."
Once Danity Kane abruptly split up following a in-studio scuffle in August, however, Richard got back to work on Blackheart.
"This album is the most experimental album of my career," Richard told Singers Room, "as well as my biggest risk taker ... This project is very special to me. We set out to redefine the term independent and really push the limits on what could be done."
