Just in time for Christmas, Coldplay debuted their warm new song "Everglow" on Zane Lowe's Beats 1 Radio show via Apple Music, featuring frontman Chris Martin's ex-wife—actress Gwyneth Paltrow—nearly a year after the two officially ended their marriage.
After the song was aired during the radio broadcast, Martin told Lowe, "I was in the ocean one day with this surfer guy, who spoke just like you’d imagine a surfer guy to speak … He was like, ‘Yo dude, I was doing this thing the other day, man, it gave me this total everglow!’ I was like, ‘What an amazing word!’ Then the song came completely out. To me, it’s about—whether it’s a loved one or a situation or a friend or a relationship that’s finished, or someone’s passed away—I was thinking about, after you’ve been through the sadness of something, you also get this everglow. That’s what it’s about.”
Although she only provides backing vocals for the track, Paltrow certainly has had plenty of vocal practice between her 2000 film Duets (where she sang on a cover of Smokey Robinson's "Cruisin'" with Huey Lewis), her cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Landslide" on Glee, as well as in her 2010 movie Country Strong.
The song is one of 11 tracks on the band's upcoming album A Head Full Of Dreams. Paltrow is one of many all-star contributors slated to appear on the album, including President Barack Obama, as well as Beyoncé, who reportedly sings on the tracks "Hymn For The Weekend" and "Up&Up" (which also features Noel Gallagher on guitar). The band also recruited Tove Lo to sing on the song "Fun." Martin recently revealed that surprisingly, Guns N' Roses were an inspiration for the new record.
A Head Full Of Dreams is due out on Dec. 4 via Parlophone/Atlantic and despite some drama concerning the band's choice of cover art, it's becoming one of the most anticipated releases of the year. The band recently released an official music video for lead single "Adventure Of A Lifetime," which has been getting mixed reviews, most likely due to the unexpected monkey theme.
