Ultra Music Festival is still welcome in Miami. Today (April 24), the Miami City Commission voted 4-1 to keep the electronic music festival in its Florida hometown, despite protests from Miami mayor Tomas Regalado, city commissioner Marc Sarnoff and city residents.
According to Radio.com, Ultra will remain planted in Miami despite a series of unfortunate events that plagues the festival this year. Consequence Of Sound reports that 76 attendees were arrested at the 2014 edition of the event (including 28 with felony charges), 118 were treated by paramedics and one 21-year-old man was found dead in his car after the festival.
The biggest tragedy to hit Ultra this year, however, was the trampling of security guard Ericka Mack, who was sent to the hospital after a break in the gate allowed gatecrashers to rush into the festival.
These events and the massive crowd that keep residents as "prisoners in their homes for three days" (according to Regalado) began a movement to kick the festival out.
But, money talks. Ultra reportedly brings in a hefty $80 million to Miami annually, a number that the city commission just couldn't say no to.
After the City of Miami announced that Ultra will be allowed to stay within its borders, festival organizers announced that it will return... on March 27 to 29, 2015.
