Steelers QB Michael Vick Lobbies for Animal Safety, Pet Safety Law Despite Dog-Fighting Past

When it comes to taking care of pets and animals in general, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Michael Vick could be the last person on your mind. The NFL star, who has played for the Atlanta Falcons, Philadelphia Eagles and New York Jets before coming the Pittsburgh is notorious for his past involvements with dog-fighting, resulting in a prison sentence. Though he might not be the face of protecting animals, Vick is ready to change the public's opinion by lobbying for a new bill that will allow police to rescue pets from hot cars in the state of Pennsylvania.

According to the new bill that Vick is hoping will make its way into becoming a law, officers will be protected by the law when saving animals from cars in hot weather. This is a large cause of animal death, so the law could see that statistic decrease if passed.

"I know that I'm an unlikely advocate," Vick said, according to ESPN.com. "I was part of the problem. Now, my perspective can help reach people that activists can't reach. I can help others become agents of change. All animals require kindness and respect. They depend on us, like children depend on us. Many animal welfare bills across the nation do not get enough attention to pass. We can change that."

He added: "[T]he only thing I can do is try to inform the masses of kids to not go down the same road I went down."

Bleacher Report points out that Vick isn't the only NFL player to draw attention to this issue. Check out Arizona Cardinals star Tyrann Mathieu partnering with PETA in a special video showing how hot a car can get in certain conditions:
