Azealia Banks unveiled the music video this week for "Count Contessa," which Pitchfork reports was revealed as the first single off the forthcoming album Fantasea II. However, before fans could rejoice over finally seeing the Harlem-born princess of rap in the headlines for what she does best, the Broke with Expensive Taste star managed to find time to blast Donald Trump and share her feelings regarding Lil Kim, Diana Ross and K. Michelle on Twitter.
Let's get the drama out of the way first: When any other artist would have been dedicating every gigabyte of her social media presence toward promoting the new video, the Young Rapunzel instead let her work speak for itself and, as she tends to, voiced her opinion about everything and everyone else under the sun.
Hot New Hip Hop reports Banks fired-off a few controversial tweets regarding the skincare regimens of Lil Kim, K. Michelle and Diana Ross. One can see how offense could have easily been taken, but looking at her Twitter feed it also seems like she could have just been commiserating with other black women in music about her own long and grueling process that involves bleaching, lasers and various beauty products.
Then, as CNN reports, the self-proclaimed mermaid appears to have flip-flopped regarding presidential hopeful Donald Trump. Awhile back she had tweeted "sort of" in support of his immigration policy because she felt maybe it would help black Americans. But this week she called the Republican candidate a "f*cking idiot." In a series of subsequent tweets she said that while she "agreed with him on 1 teeny-tiny-eeny-weeny bit on ONE tiny-teeny thing," Trump is "truly embarrassing the Gemini community right now. Way worse than I ever have....And that is saying ALOT."
Back to the music. Stereogum reports that it is unlikely that we'll see any new music from Banks until at least March because of other label-related drama, so let's revel in this new video, which features the rapper walking a pig on the beach, getting her fortune read by Mama Zee Zee, and then dancing gracefully among the breakers like the mermaid we all know she is. The track was produced by Lone and samples his track "Aquamarine." Watch the Rony Alwin-directed video below.
