Ed Sheeran is officially calling it quits with social media , for now. After wrapping up his extensive X World Tour earlier in the week and previously hinting his break from the interweb, the British singer decided it was time to step away from the screens and enjoy the real world through his own eyes.
Prior to finishing his Auckland, New Zealand gig on Saturday, the 24-year-old detailed his official plans to pull himself away from social media as well as allowing himself to get some well-needed rest and personal time off, trailing a grueling touring schedule since August 2014, People notes. The Australian leg of his tour brought a special performance of "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" alongside famed performer Elton John.
Taking time off couldn't come at a better time, however, seeing as how the Gingerbread Man Records owner recently admitted he was going to need ear drum surgery in the wake of the new year following a yacht accident.
"Hello all. I am taking a break from my phone, emails and all social media for a while," he wrote on his personal Instagram. "I've had such an amazing ride over the last 5 years but I find myself seeing the world through a screen and not my eyes, so I'm taking this opportunity of me not having to be anywhere or do anything to travel the world and see everything I missed."
"To my family and friends, if you love me, you will understand me buggering off for a bit," the "Thinking Out Loud" singer continued. "To my fans, the 3rd album is on its way and is the best thing I have made thus far. See you all next autumn, and thank you for being amazing."
At least the "Photograph" singer gave his fans a bit of solace by admitting that he'd come back to the Internet world sometime in the fall.
