The Breaks is based off of journalist and author Dan Charnas' The Big Payback. The movie follows three friends (Nikki, David and DeeVee) throughout their ventures to make it in the music industry during the Summer of 1990. Nikki (played by Afton Williamson) is an up-and-coming rapper that leaves her law scholarship behind for music. David (played by David Call) is Nikki's boyfriend and struggling to get the radio station where he works to play hip-hop. DeeVee (played by Mack Wilds) is a producer trying to find the next best talent while avoiding his overbearing father (Method Man). The film also features Wood Harris and Antoine Harris. It's written, produced and directed by Seith Mann. Mann is known for directing The Wire, Homeland, The Walking Dead and Elementary. DJ Premier serves as the executive music producer for the film.

Wilds and Williamson attended The Breaks afterparty last Thursday to celebrate the film and Wilds gave a special performance of his newest track, "Love in the 90z." Mack sings, "You have some Daisy Dukes that stop below the waist/Showin' off your bikini line/And I know that you/Got a thing for the young boy/And I know that you/Fuck with dudes in them fast cars." The track was released in honor of the new film.

If The Breaks does well, it has the potential to become a series. Make sure to catch it on VH1 on Jan. 4th at 9pm EST.
