On Saturday (Dec. 12) during his band Kevin Devine and The Goddamn Band's set in Philadelphia, Devine invited his pal, Brand New's Jesse Lacey, to join him for a rocking cover of Nirvana's "Lithium" for the audience.
Devine has been recruiting a slew of collaborators for his latest Devinyl Splits 7-inch series, including Nada Surf's Matthew Caws, Tigers Jaw, and Owen.
The "Lithium" cover from Devine and Lacey is undeniably awesome, with the two guitarists, as well as Cymbals Eat Guitars' Joe D'Agostino (who appears on Devinyl Splits 4), nailing every riff with just the right amount of force that the song demands, with Lacey and Devine screaming the vocals with enough intensity to make even Kurt Cobain proud.
Devine later performed Brand New songs "Bought a Bride," new single "Mene," and "Okay I Believe You, But My Tommy Gun Don't." D'Agostino had joined in on the last of the three before Cymbals Eat Guitars were joined by Lacey "Aerobed," a track the Brand New frontman helped produce.
A tweet posted in the show's wake by Thomas Nassiff, head of Bad Timing Records, hints that Lacey will indeed be Devine's collaborator for an upcoming Devinyl Splits 6 release. Brand New recently released their previously leaked demos on limited edition red cassette. As far as a new album is concerned, however, there hasn't been any new updates except for further hints that it will be their last.
