Pusha T has been on a whirlwind media tour in support of his brand new album Darkest Before Dawn and while in New York City last week stopped in with Sway in The Morning on Shade 45 to talk the music business, Lil Wayne's current situation and spit a quick freestyle.
As the new president of Kanye West's G.O.O.D Music, Pusha T offers a unique perspective on the music industry. He is one who began as a struggling artist, reminiscing about being a new rapper trying in vain to get meetings in New York through the "mail room guy" at labels that posed as an A&R. Now he is a successful recording artist with years of experience under his belt.
On the other side he views the industry as the president of G.O.O.D Music, advising artists to make sure they get their business right first and foremost. He admires new independent acts that can handle business without some outside source funding the operation, but hates seeing it all come down when the money disappears.
He is asked about who he looks to sign at G.O.O.D Music and doesn't offer up a definitive answer, but does admit that lyrical skill does catch his ear right away. He does look for artists who are self-contained creatively, which is becoming necessary in the internet age.
The all-encompassing interview touches on other topics like the Lil Wayne situation with Cash Money, which Push calls "disgusting," politics, including the Black Lives Matter movement and a lot more. He also goes over a few of the lyrics on the album, including why working with Diddy was so difficult and what it taught him.
Right at the end of the interview, King Push flexes his lyrical muscle with a short, but impressive one-minute freestyle.
