Known for his childish antics and his recent attempts at retribution for his behavior, Purpose singer Justin Bieber decided to spread some musical holiday cheer. While releasing one hit single after another, the Canadian pop star asked his fans to lay low when it comes to "Love Yourself," asking them to instead focus all listening and attention to bringing the NHS Choir's latest charity single to No. 1 for the holidays--and it worked.
Just two days before Christmas day, the 21-year-old pleaded with his fans via social media in hopes of making the National Health Service Choir charity song, "A Bridge Over You," to No. 1 for the U.K.'s annual Christmas race, Entertainment Weekly notes.
"I'm hearing this U.K. Christmas race is close...but the [NHS Choir] single is for charity," the "Sorry" singer wrote. "For 1 week it's ok not to be #1. Let's do the right thing & help them win. It's Christmas."
The Lewisham & Greenwich NHS Choir, made up of doctors and nurses, trailed "Love Yourself" by several hundred sales but by the time Christmas Day roled around, "A Bridge Over You" officially stole the No. 1 slot from Bieber will 127,000 downloads and sales, according to The Guardian--almost 31,000 over Bieber's Purpose hit.
"Thank you SO very much to all our followers and supporters. We still can't quite believe this has happened!" the NHS choir tweeted on Friday. "Happy Christmas." All proceeds from the choir's single will go directly to British charities, including Caerers UK and Mind.
After rolling out smash hits like "Where Are U Now" "Sorry," "What Do You Mean?" "Love Yourself" and "I'll Show You," it only made sense for Bieber to share his chart-topping success with those who need it most around the holidays.
