It's a new year so that means it is time for some new music. DJ Mustard is providing the fans with just that with his new collaboration alongside Travis Scott "Whole Lotta Lovin'."
The tune is both artist's attempts at a Calvin Harris-esque club / dance record that should be take over the radio airwaves and club DJ sets imminently. The track starts out with the sounds you expect from DJ Mustard as Scott goes a little softer than one might expect from him, crooning out sweet nothings to a special someone. It then transitions to a synth lead awfully similar to that on Calvin Harris and Rihanna's diamond single (sold over 10 million copies) "We Found Love."
Scott croons over a sample of CeCe Peniston's "Finally" and applies some autotune liberally throughout.
"Whole Lotta Lovin'" was premiered yesterday by Zane Lowe yesterday on Beats 1 and shortly thereafter released on all streaming services and digital download stores.
The track is quite different from what we have heard from the two artists in the past couple of years. Scott released his debut album Rodeo, which was his harder hip-hop sound, but he has also been the go-to guy among the Def Jam elite, including Rihanna, for writing and producing. This time with her could have rubbed off on him to put together this dance radio hit.
"Whole Lotta Lovin'" has all of the hallmarks of a DJ Mustard record, but more of a club and dance appeal.
Mustard's tracks were everywhere on the radio and it became almost expected to hear "Mutta on the beat" at least once an hour in a rotation. This won't change that, but it is a different sound for a little variation in his recent discography.
