Singer Nick Carter was taken into custody Wednesday after a bar fight in Key West, Florida. The 35-year-old Backstreet Boys member was arrested after an incident at the popular Hog's Breath Saloon in the Keys.
This is not the first time the boy band member, whose struggle with addiction is well documented, has been arrested. In 2002, Carter was arrested after an incident at a bar in Tampa. As part of a plea deal, the charges were dropped after the singer agreed to pay a fine and complete community service. In 2005, Carter was in trouble once again, pleading guilty to misdemeanor drunk driving. This arrest turned out to be another slap on the wrist after the singer was ordered to complete a three-month stint in an alcohol treatment program.
In 2015, things seemed to be looking up for the former star, who toured the world and sold millions of records as a member of one of the hottest boy bands of his time. He jived and quick-stepped his way into second place on the popular ballroom show Dancing With the Stars, and even used a live taping of the show to announce that he and his wife Lauren Kitt were expecting their first child, a son, this year. In a fabulous, celebrity-style gender reveal party, Carter and Kitt opened a package onstage that released dozens of blue balloons.
The couple was especially overjoyed because they'd been pregnant before and lost the baby. "It's been rocky to be quite honest with you," Carter said during an interview. "There's been times when we thought it wouldn't happen." Kitt agreed, saying, "It was really hard on Nick."
Carter has been struggling with his demons for a long time, and detailed those struggles in his autobiography, Facing the Music and Living to Talk About It. "I began drinking heavily in my teens and then moved on to drugs at 18 or 19, starting with marijuana and moving up to cocaine, Ecstasy, and prescription painkillers among other substances," he wrote. He also sat with ET for an exclusive interview on his issues with drugs and alcohol. He said it was the physical toll that addiction had on him that made him change his ways. "I was gaining weight at the time, the color in my face was gone," Nick said. "I was able to look in the mirror at one point and said to myself, 'I don't want to be that person that you turn on the television and they're saying, 'We feel really bad because he died.'" He also credits his wife with him changing his ways. "She was a woman who wasn't afraid to tell me like no," Nick said of Kitt. "She's like my shield, and I'm her shield."
According to the Key West Police arrest log, Carter was arrested for one misdemeanor count of battery, touch or strike on Wednesday evening. As of press time, the singer is still in custody, and bail has not yet been set.
