Avicii concert in Toronto spawns 29 drug-related hospitalizations, continuing horrifying trend in EDM

The rampant problems of drug use in the EDM community continued over the weekend, after nearly 30 concertgoers were sent to the hospital for drug and alcohol use during an Avicii concert in Toronto.

According to CTV, the sold-out show at Toronto's 20,000-seat Rogers Centre spawned 29 sick attendees due to overconsumption. Emergency medical services had to be called into the venue after the demand for medical treatment because too high for the venue's in-house staff.

"Unfortunately, we have a few kids... excessive alcohol and partying, and they can't handle it," EMS commander Peter Rotolo stated.

Of the 29 sick concertgoers, five were listed as being in serious condition at the hospital but all are expected to make a full recovery.

Alongside the hospitalizations, at least one patron was arrested for drug use at the show.

Despite the hospitalizations, the Avicii concert went on as scheduled.

The Avicii show drug overdose story if just the latest in an unfortunate tie between EDM concerts and festivals and unsafe drug use. Last year, two attendees died at New York's Electric Zoo Festival, which made fest organizers pump up security for the 2014 edition.

Ultra Music Festival was also marked by a drug overdose death and the opening show of Zedd's 2013 tour.

Avicii's string of live shows will continue on Sunday, May 25, in Las Vegas.
