Kesha has been embroiled in a bitter legal battle against her former producer Dr. Luke, his Kemosabe label and parent company Sony Entertainment in an effort to be allowed to release new music. The "Timber" singer is not allowed to discuss the case with either fans or the media and is still barred from releasing new music. But Kesha is not taking her silence lying down and released a new video for fans over the weekend on social media where she covers the religious classic "Amazing Grace." The video was entitled the #FreeKesha protest.
"Good morning everybody. I love you guys, more than you will ever know," she says into the camera and appears to tear up just a bit. "I can't put out new music, but I can sing a little something of someone else's songs or something that exists," before transitioning into "Amazing Grace."
According to E! the video posted by a fan urged others to make an appearance at the New York City courthouse this week during her court appearance against Dr. Luke and protest Kesha's ban on releasing new music. However, due to the weather the pop singer has had the hearing postponed until Feb. 19.
The battle between Kesha and Dr. Luke came to a head in late October when Kesha requested a preliminary injunction to force a judge's hand in ruling on the validity of her recording contracts. On Oct. 30, her lawyer filed the injunction that would allow the singer to record new music without the services of Dr. Luke and Kemosabe.
According to NY Magazine, her attorney, Mark Geragos, gave a New York judge a letter written to Sony requesting that Sebert be permitted to begin recording a new album on her own without Dr. Luke. In the brief submitted Geragos wrote, "Kesha now faces an abysmal decision: work with her alleged abuser... or idly and passively wait as her career tick-ticks away."
