Yesterday, Feb. 3 New York City lost one beloved veteran in the hip-hop scene, DJ Big Kap. The longtime DJ and collaborator with the likes of Notorious B.I.G., Funkmaster Flex and Nas was found dead in the morning. Now the cause of death has been revealed to be a heart attack by his road manager Ab Traxx.
Speaking to Billboard last night, Ab said he had spoken with Big Kap the night before.
"Last night when I talked to him, he was fine," he recalls. "He was on the computer at 1AM and then I got the phone call at 4 in the morning from the artist he stays with, Bank Boy Drop. He's an artist based out of Florida we was actually workin' on."
He revealed that the DJ had some preexisting health conditions, mainly diabetes, but didn't think those contributed to his death.
"He had diabetes but I don't think it had anything to do with [his death]."
The hip-hop icon was best known for his 1999 collaborative album The Tunnel done alongside Funkmaster Flex. The LP had features from the likes of Nas, Jay Z and Eminem, as well as posthumous features from Tupac and Notorious B.I.G.
After his death, he was remembered by friends and colleagues including Flex, DJ Khaled, Rick Ross and many others.
He was scheduled to do a show in Atlanta on Feb. 3. The event will now be turned into a memorial for the DJ.
