Kelsea Ballerini is taking the country world by storm with her irresistable blend of pop and country. With a smart and confident point of view in her lyricism and hooks that will get stuck in your head for days, it's hard not to call "Dibs" on her as one of the next big things in the genre.
And now, Music Times has something for you to call "Dibs" on... a signed lyric sheet of Ballerini's new big hit off her debut album The First Time. Ahead of the big giveaway, we caught up with Ballerini and talked about her new single as well as her friendship with fellow (former) pop-country star Taylor Swift and what she has in store for her fans this year!
Music Times: "Dibs" is the second single off your debut album The First Time. How did you select that track over the others?
Kelsea Ballerini: "Dibs" started taking on a really cool life in the live set, and getting airplay on SiriusXM's The Highway and Radio Disney. It felt like it had this really special head start, and we wanted to see what the reaction would be at country radio.
MT: As the title and lyrics suggest, "Dibs" is all about claiming a new love before someone else gets to him. Is there any real life inspiration behind this track?
KB: I just love the idea of a girl having the confidence to claim what she feels and wants. That's the underlying message of the song.
MT: You co-wrote "Dibs" alongside Josh Kerr, Ryan Griffin and Jason Duke. What was the writing process like for this song?
KB: It was a total accident! We all write together all the time and had good chemistry, and it kind of wrote itself in 45 minutes. Those are the best!
MT: Your sound is often compared to Taylor Swift's earlier music, and you guys look like great friends - Do you take any inspiration from her? Has she given you any advice on traversing the road of pop-country?
KB: Taylor is incredible. Not only has she been someone I've looked up to as a songwriter and artist for years, but she's someone I've looked up to as a role model. To have her as a friend now and someone to personally learn from is something I'm really thankful for.
MT: You had a huge 2015 with a No. 1 single at country radio, multiple CMA Award nominations and plenty of buzz surrounding your career. What's next for you in 2016?
KB: More music! Excited to keep seeing what happens with Dibs and releasing the follow up! Also starting record my next record. And touring with Rascal Flatts and Billy Currington. I can't wait to introduce myself and my music to more people.
To help celebrate the success of "Dibs," Kelsea Ballerini is teaming up with Music Times to give away a copy of the song's lyrics signed to one lucky fan! The handwritten lyrics, signed with a heart and smile by Kelsea herself,
