He's one half of a four-time Grammy winning duo, had one of the biggest hits of 2013 with "Thrift Shop" and at least his name is well known... but still, music fans don't know who the other half of Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Ryan Lewis, is and what exactly he does... It's obvious Ben Haggerty raps, but what's the other guy's job?
The answer is... no one really knows. So, last night (June 2), The Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon sent the hip-hop producer himself to the streets of New York City to ask supposed rap fans exactly what it is that brunette guy behind Macklemore does, undisguised. Of course, what followed was a totally awkward transaction, wherein music lovers largely didn't even recognize Lewis as he asked them questions about his own group.
"Ryan Lewis... Don't really know what he does. I know he's like a package deal; he comes with Macklemore a lot," the first interview subject said in a standard answer.
Despite being unrecognized, Lewis is notably happy while talking to his supposed fans, even after one woman only gives his looks a C+ rating...
In the end, fans either recognize Lewis after he shows them a photo of himself with Macklemore, but even that doesn't always work. He is Ryan Lewis, the elusive producer...
