Uh, there's no other way to phrase this so we're just going to say it: boy band 5 Seconds Of Summer has covered Green Day's signature tune "American Idiot." The new twist on the classic track was released today (June 11) as a part of Kerrang!'s tribute album to American Idiot, marking the record's 10-year anniversary.
Originally marked with nothing but pure punk energy, 5SOS kick up the autotune and vocal distortions to make this song sound not quite as biting as the Green Day version. Whereas Billie Joe Armstrong spit venom on the 2004 track, 5 Seconds Of Summer keep things relatively light on their respective vocals, making for a product that sounds overproduced.
Adding to the commercial feel of the single, the signature original line "Well maybe I'm the f****t America" is fuzzed out completely, making for a lyrically censored, less powerful message.

Despite the cover's merits, the ever-rabid fans of 5 Seconds Of Summer are going nuts over the new release, getting the topic "American Idiot" trending in the top 10 on U.S. Twitter. Fans are using this opportunity to note that 5SOS are a "legit" band instead of a "boy" band.
