LL Cool J Says Current Rappers are Truly Overrated, Readies New Album

The G.O.A.T, LL Cool J, has officially announced that a new album is on the way and revealed his motivation behind the new body of work. LL, whose real name is James Todd Smith, rapper believes many current rappers are truly overrated and insist that his new songs will prove that he still reigns as the greatest.

The hip-hop pioneer shared the exciting new on his Twitter page, on Thursday, March 14, letting the world know he is soon to release new music from his new album.

"The Boomin' System" rapper not only shared the news of his new project underway, but he also felt the need to explain why it was time for him to come out of retirement and make new music. During an interview with OK Player, "Uncle L," as he is commonly referred, explained in detail what he considers to be the major difference between rappers from his era and new school, present-day rappers.

"Stylistically, obviously there are some rappers that are more singing, and some that are more entertaining, and some that want to do more pop," explained the 48-year-old. "But for me, the purity of just crazy beats and rhymes is the cloth I'm cut from."

Smith believes that it is his duty and responsibility as a hip-hop icon to provide the template for the younger generation of rappers to start making better music. He believes his new project will be something special and shift the sound of hip-hop as we know it, especially since Smith believes most of the rappers that are out today, are truly overrated.

"There are some really, really talented artists out there in hip-hop culture and there are some guys who are getting 50-point credit for 20-point games," Smith said. "There are some guys out there who are really, really special and it's obvious. They're spitting, and they can hold their own with the best of them. And then I think there are other guys out there that really and truly are just overrated."

Though there's no official release date for the new project, LL is known for showing and proving how talented he is, after reaching continued level of Billboard success with 14 of his album landing at the top of the charts over the years, according to UPI.
