On Thursday (March 17) night, Mississippi duo Rae Sremmurd took the stage for a set at The FADER FORT at SXSW 2016 and shared some of their political views with the crowd. During the performance, Swae Lee slammed Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump and endorsed Bernie Sanders.
During a live rendition of the Sonny Digital-produced "Up Like Trump," Lee made a bold assertion towards the man they named the track after.
“F*ck Donald Trump,” he said. “We’re voting for Bernie Sanders.”
While backstage, Lee elaborated on his comments and noted a distinction between Trump’s business savvy and the messages he’s delivering to the masses.
"Man, he’s a businessman," Lee told The FADER. "He shouldn’t be trying to go into office with it. Leave that to the real politicians. Still get your money, but you don’t need to put a negative influence in the world. People are already gullible. Don’t lead them in the wrong direction. We’re trying to see progress. Sremm life."
“Up Like Trump” was originally featured in the duo’s debut album SremmLife, which debuted at No. 1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart last January. The album also featured the hit singles "No Type," "This Could Be Us" and "Throw Sum Mo" featuring Nicki Minaj and Young Thug.
Rae Sremmurd is currently prepping the release of their sophomore album. It was previously reported that SremmLife 2 would be released in February 2016, but that date has come and gone with no sign of the album.
No word of an updated release date.
