Mike Posner's career wasn't going anywhere for the longest time, trapped in the purgatory of college white pop rapper / singer with a fan base that had graduated and moved on. He has been writing for others, but then linked up with Avicii and apparently after taking a pill in Ibiza at a gig, he found the inspiration to write the single "I Took A Pill In Ibiza," which was later remixed by Norwegian duo Seeb into a hit. This has angered Ibiza tourism officials who are trying to shake the hedonistic image of the White Isle and preserve some sort of cultural and historic identity that remains before it is run off by drunken vacationers and VIPs.
They have invited Mr. Posner back to Ibiza to see the other side of the Island that isn't all drugs, alcohol and partying. The part with castles, museums, culture and food.
"We have invited the author of this song to discover Ibiza because we have much more to offer besides the nightlife which is known worldwide," the island's tourism director, Vicent Ferrer, told AFP via The Guardian.
"We have museums, beaches, culture, gastronomy, we have a wide offer but unfortunately we have been typecast this way. Unfortunately someone who wants to consume pills or alcohol can be found in any tourist destination, the fact that it is only us who are pigeonholed does not seem fair."
The Seeb remix of "I Took A Pill In Ibiza" has shot up the Billboard Hot 100 charts into the top 10 and is still climbing. It is currently topping the British singles charts.
Tourism authorities battled off another challenge to their identity last year when MTV canceled their plans to start a Jersey Shore-type of show in Ibiza called Ibiza Shore with rowdy guests taking full advantage of the partying options on the island.
