Ellen DeGeneres has a talent for making her guests feel comfortable enough to open up about intimate details in their life. Friend and frequent visitor, Nicki Minaj, stopped by the daytime talk show for a Thursday (Apr. 7) airing and it's safe to say there was no shortage of juicy details. The rapper spoke candidly about the status of her relationship with Meek Mill and here's a hint: they did not breakup.
DeGeneres could not stop thinking about the enormous diamond ring Meek gave Nicki back in December, so the host started off by asking her about it, mistakenly calling it an engagement ring. The 33-year-old Trinidad native quickly corrected her, clarifying what the ring actually stands for.
Nicki revealed she actually received two ring from Meek or as she referred to him, "this boy who likes me." If there comes a time when Meek gifts her with a third ring, then and only then, will that be considered an engagement ring. The "Anaconda" rapper isn't sure she's ready to get married just yet, revealing they're still getting to know each other and having a good time doing so.
"I don't know," Nicki told DeGeneres. "We're still figuring each other out. In fact, I don't even want to say I'm in a relationship anymore cause I think when people hear that, they go to a mean place. I used to say I'm not in a relationship even though I was in a 12-year relationship. Now, [I'm] just going back to that and saying I'm single."
Living in the public eye isn't easy, especially when the celebrity is in a relationship. Nicki gave an example of the social media uproar that occurred on Valentine's Day, when fans immediately assumed the couple broke up just because Nicki didn't post her gifts from him on Instagram. In reality, the two actually spent the whole day together in bed and the last thing on her mind was Instagram.
However, she did take to Instagram to let the world know Omeeka (their celebrity couple nickname) is still alive and well. Snippets of her interview with DeGeneres led many to believe Nicki was announcing her new single status, but that's far from what she meant.
“And forget trying to get everyone’s approval," Nicki added. "It’s better to just keep those things sacred. So now, I don’t really care to say I’m in a relationship. There’s a boy that likes me, that’s all. He and I are just two souls right now passing through the universe and I don’t know what’s going to happen and I have learned over the years to just let things be and come and go.”
Nicki is currently promoting her upcoming film, Barbershop 3, which is scheduled to hit theaters next Friday (Apr. 15). The Ellen DeGeneres Show airs weekdays at 4 p.m. EST on NBC.
