When Forbes estimates your net worth as $320 million, a sales tax bill of a mere $250,000 shouldn't cause you to shudder, but apparently being "outed" in the press and having an "accounting error" will - even if you're Toby Keith. Once the news of his tax debt and the ensuing tax warrant came out on Tuesday, Toby Keith's I Love This Bar did better than putting a payment in the mail. They paid the debt off completely.
John Thomas, a company spokesman, said the company had been working with the IRS and had a payment plan they were using, but after the news came out, the New York tax debt was settled entirely.
As luck would have it, Uncle Sam wasn't the only government agency that the chain owed back taxes to. The Newport News (Virginia) Commissioner of Revenue revealed on Wednesday that the bar at City Center owed some taxes, too. The food and beverage taxes for March, April and May had never been paid. Thomas explained the late bill by saying that an accounting error caused the payments not to go through, but the company made sure the payment was received by the city Thursday afternoon. An email from the city verified that the payment had been overnighted.
One just has to wonder, how many plates of wings served with beer out of mason jars so you have to sell in order to owe $250k? More than chicken feed!
