On her website today, Yeah Yeah Yeahs singer Karen O announced her debut solo album, Crush Songs. According to Pitchfork, the album will be released on September 8 in the United Kingdom and on September 9 in the United States through Cult Records, the label owned by Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas.
A handwritten note posted to O's website explains the album's title and origins. The note reads:
"When I was 27 I crushed a lot. I wasn't sure if I'd ever fall in love again. These songs were written and recorded in private around this time. They are the soundtrack to what was an ever continuing love crusade. I hope they keep you company on yours."
Since Karen O (born Karen Lee Orzolek) is 35 years old now, this would mean that Crush Songs was written and recorded all the way back in 2006 or 2007. Though the album will be Karen O's full-length solo debut, this isn't the first time she's released music apart from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. She's previously contributed music to the films of Spike Jonze, including the score to Where The Wild Things Are (credited to "Karen O and the Kids") and the Oscar-nominated "The Moon Song" from the film Her, which she performed with Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig at this year's Academy Awards ceremony.
A limited "signed and numbered" deluxe vinyl edition of Crush Songs is available for pre-order now through the Cult Records website, which features "sunburst colored vinyl + custom envelope containing 15 cards of personal drawings with hand-written lyrics."
