Just days after the full cast of The New Edition Story appeared on stage at the 2016 BET Awards, the network has released the exclusive trailer for the upcoming miniseries.
The story of five young boys from Massachusetts who formed the R&B group New Edition and contributed classic singles like "Candy Girl" and "Can You Stand The Rain" will soon have their story told through the BET miniseries, The New Edition Story. On Sunday, June 26, the network aired the annual BET Awards, where the five actors who will portray each individual group member, took the stage to introduce themselves to the audience.
Wood Harris, who starred as Avon Barksdale in the HBO original series The Wire, will play Brooke Payne, the man credited for renaming the group and taking the guys to the next level in their careers. Luke James, Algee Smith, Elijah Kelley, Keith Powers and Bryshere Gray of FOX's Empire will play four of the group members, Johnny Gill, Ralph Tresvant, Ricky Bell, Ron DeVoe and Michael Bivins.
Original group member who was later voted out of the group and started a solo career, Bobby Brown, will be played by Woody McClain. Brown made a surprise appearance at the awards show, joining the group of men on stage and commenting on his separation from New Edition.
"I had to come out here with one group I couldn't be kicked out of," Brown stated.
The film is set to reveal the behind the scenes drama and turmoil that began to fester within the group, showing key moments of what led Bell, DeVoe, Tresvant and Bivins to vote Brown out of the group. Though it was only the adult actors who made an appearance at the awards ceremony, the film will also show the boys in the beginning stages of their careers, when they were only children -- around 9 or 10 years old. Five child actors have also been cast for the film to bring that portion of their journey to the small screen, as reported by Business Wire. Watch the BET Exclusive Trailer.
