Taylor Swift has donated $1 million to Louisiana to help in the state's disaster relief efforts. According to the "Shake it Off" singer, Louisiana holds a special place in her heart because it was where the U.S. leg of her 1989 World Tour started.
According to Associated Press, the torrential rains that ravaged Louisiana last week caused massive flooding in various areas within the state and led to 11 deaths. The floods also caused damage to over 40,000 homes and have forced more than 60,000 people to seek disaster aid from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
After learning about what happened to the state, Swift decided to make a generous donation to help the people of Louisiana. In a press release, the pop star said that she decided to donate $1 million to the state because of how her fans in Louisiana treated her when she kicked off her 1989 World Tour in Bossier City.
"We began the 1989 World Tour in Louisiana, and the wonderful fans there made us feel completely at home," she said in a statement. "The fact that so many people in Louisiana have been forced out of their own homes this week is heartbreaking."
"I encourage those who can help out and send your love and prayers their way during this devastating time," she added.
According to The Guardian, over 30,000 individuals have been rescued in different parts of Louisiana since Friday. The event has been described as one of the worst natural disasters in Louisiana's history. The National Weather Service even referred to the flooding as a "thousand-year disaster."
