In 2006, John left the road and started teaching at a Christian School in La Follette, Tennessee, where he taught until 2011. During his tenure, music was still in his blood and in 2009, he teamed up with Adam Steffey, Ronnie Stewart, Harold Nixon and Keith Garrett to form The Boxcars. The group spent three years touring and recorded 3 projects, winning an IBMA award.

In 2010, Bowman released a tribute CD to his father-in-law, Joe Isaacs called Family Chain: The Songs of Joe Isaacs. The same year, he earned a degree in Christian ministries from Oakland City University in Indiana through the Hopper Foundation.

Last month, John released an acoustic CD titled, Worship Him based on his preaching dates where it's just him, his guitar and his Savior. He told Bluegrass Today, "I’ve been going out doing some preaching, and when I’ve been preaching and singing it was usually just me and a guitar. I’ve always wanted to do a record like that, so I decided to recreate on CD what I’ve been doing at these revivals and preaching dates. The theme is always about worshiping God, so I titled the album, “Worship Him.” There are some new songs that people haven’t heard, several of them are pretty obscure, and I’ll bet 90% will be new to bluegrass listeners."
