Pharrell has not been releasing much music lately, but he just decided to unveil two new tracks of his own that are slated to be a part of the Hidden Figures Soundtrack he is scoring. Titled "Runnin" and "Surrender," the "Happy" singer has two smooth jams to add to the soundtrack.
He first unveiled his solo track "Runnin."
He is back with another smooth, upbeat and cheery jam. Despite the feel and tempo of the song, Pharrell actually tackles a more serious issue of racial inequality and injustice in society.
"Runnin' from the man (man) runnin' from the badge (badge) / Don't act like you was there when you wasn't / Runnin' toward our plans (plans) and the judges hands (hands) / Don't act like you was there when you wasn't," he sings in the first refrain.
He then revealed, "Surrender" featuring Lalah Hathaway. It has a similar upbeat feel to it, with bluesy guitars and a funky beat. This time the tune comes with an uplifting message to believe and never surrender.
Pharrell and soundtracks is a match made in heaven. Remember that "Happy" was made for the Despicable Me 2 Soundtrack. These two new ones may not have the longevity of "Happy" as they don't have the hook for a year of radio play, but these are worthy additions to his catalog.
Hidden Figures will hit theaters on Jan. 13. It is a film based on the real-life story of three black women working at NASA. It stars Janelle Monae, Octavia Spencer and Taraji P. Henson.
Both singles can be picked up on iTunes.
