Grimes is the latest artist to use her star-power to try and get her fans out to the polls today for the 2016 United States presidential election. She posted a video in favor of Hillary Clinton heavily influenced by the famous Lyndon B. Johnson "Daisy Girl" Barry Goldwater Attack ad of 1964.
It starts with a young girl picking the petals off of a blue flower before flipping to an ominous scene of a nuclear explosion. Johnson's voice comes in warning viewers against voting for Goldwater, which can in this case be substituted for Trump, "We must either love each other, or we must die."
Grimes adds her own words, pushing her supporters to go out and vote for Clinton.
"Vote for Secretary Clinton on November 8th," says Grimes. "The stakes are too high for you to stay home."
The video is almost shot-by-shot replica of the chilling 1964 ad that had a very large impact on that election and still resonates today. The opening scene could be Grimes instead the daisy girl
There is some irony to the ad. Hilary Clinton was a Goldwater girl in her youth. However, Trump has been quite cavalier by many estimations with his rhetoric over the use of nuclear weapons.
Grimes is Canadian true -- but her country has seemed more appealing after this slog of an election cycle.
If you are a United States citizen, 18 or older and have a pulse, go vote. Make your voice heard.
